CERES/ARM Validation Experiment (CAVE)
|
This page is meant to be a clearing house for "issues" with the Clouds and Radiative Swath (CRS) CERES data product.
For a description of the data files themselves, click on the link above marked "CERES CRS Data".
Here we hope to deal with some of it's more confusing aspects.
Notes on official CRS processed data:

"Beta" vs "Edition" |
This is from CERES data product nomenclature. Beta versions of CERES data are preliminary test output, not to be used for publishable studies. "Edition" indicates a satisfactory version that does contain data for publishable quality studies. None-the-less, read the Data quality summary because sometimes Editions can have problems too. |

| TRMM Edition 2B and 2C? |
Why is TRMM Edition 2B validated here and not Edition 2C, the latest version? Due to a technical problem processing TRMM Edition 2B (a small number of footprints were omitted), the data were reprocessed from binary (Edition 2B) into EOS-HDF files. When this occurred the "new" (though almost identical) data set required a new name (Edition 2C). However, since very few footprints were added it was not deemed worthwhile to redo the validation. |

Collection 4 and Collection 5 |
CERES advanced data products (SSF & CRS) depend on input from the MODIS imager on board Terra and Aqua. The term "collection" refers to different editions of MODIS data input into the CERES data stream. The effect on CRS of a change in the MODIS collection data is to change the CRS Edition number. However, these edition numbers are not uniform across the EOS satellites. This change occured in 2006. |

GEOS 4 and GEOS 5 |
GEOS data is the meteorological profile data re-analysis product from GMAO that CERES uses in its processing. TRMM processing used ECMWF. Terra and Aqua CERES processing uses GEOS-4. This is expected to switch to GEOS-5 in 2009. |
